New arenas
Paper.io 2 is out now, and it seems everyone with an iPhone or iPad is playing it.
We exaggerate, of course. But the game is undoubtedly performing well on both the US and UK App Store.
Voodoo games tend to do that, of course, but it’s more than that. As the name suggests, Paper.io 2 is the sequel to a very popular casual multiplayer game.
Unsurprisingly, Paper.io 2 plays a lot like Paper.io, but with a big improvement in graphics. There’s a chunky 3D feel to everything, while the rigid box-drawing of the original has given way to flowing splodges of colour.
It’s an improvement, then, but we still reckon you can do better if you’re in the mood for some massively multiplayer .io action. Check out the following alternatives.
1
Thunderdogs
Thunderdogs marries the .io premise with classic top-down shoot-‘em-ups of old, with a charming art style and thrilling aerial combat. If you want a more involving, skill-based game after Paper.io 2, this would be a great choice.
2
AXE.IO

Axe.io is one of our favourite .io games, and it's certainly the nicest looking. In it you play as a marauding viking warrior, as you take out your opponents with a carefully timed axe-throw or sword slash.
3
Munchkin.io

Munchkin takes the .io genre and mixes in a little action RPG magic. But there’s more mash-up madness, in the form of a fully fledges Battle Royale mode, with shrinking playing field and brutal last-man-standing rules.
4
Diep.io
Diep.io shifts the focus onto twin-stick tank combat. This means that there's more than a smidgen of twitchy skill to its gameplay, which makes a refreshing change from most .io games.
